The Ministry of Industries and Production has suggested importing 0.200 million metric tons of urea fertilizer to ensure stability in prices and supply during the Kharif season of 2024. Local urea producers have recently raised prices without a corresponding increase in input costs.
Authorities are seeking explanations from the producers regarding the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC).
The demand for urea fertilizer has risen by 3.6% compared to the previous year, with an anticipated demand of 3442 metric tons and an existing stock of 3192 metric tons. To address the shortfall, the government plans to import urea and increase local production, ensuring full operational capacity of local plants and smooth gas supply to the industry. All local urea plants will operate at full capacity to meet demand, and the government is ensuring smooth gas supply to the industry. The timely arrival of imported urea aims to enhance food security and stabilize local prices for farmers.
