Thar coal is currently generating approximately 2,640 MW of electricity for Pakistan’s national grid, with projections to reach 3,280 MW by year-end. Azhar Malik, VP of Site Operations at SECMC, stated that each of the two operational blocks produces 1,320 MW. Thar coal could save Pakistan $8 billion annually by producing cheaper electricity, with costs potentially dropping from Rs 24 to Rs 20 per unit.
Malik highlighted that Thar coal reserves, capable of generating 100,000 MW for 200 years, could significantly impact the economy if industries such as cement and urea fertilizer plants shift to this fuel source. Currently, SECMC and China’s Shanghai Electric Company each generate 1,320 MW from Blocks II and I, respectively.
A new 105 km railway line from Islamkot to Chhor has been approved to facilitate coal transport, benefiting various industries. The Thar Foundation, associated with SECMC, employs over 63% locals and supports community development with hospitals, schools, and training programs, including a new Coal Mining Technology course with plans for student training in China.
